SLIIT poised for new student admissions

 

Ambitious students who seek professional qualifications in the field of IT invariably turn to Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT). Its goal to contribute to the nation as a centre of excellence in IT was rapidly accomplished within a decade since SLIIT was established, to meet the needs of a fast expanding IT industry.

Today SLIIT is the largest IT degree awarding institute with a faculty of highly qualified dedicated in-house academic staff and recognized by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. Its capacity to promote, nurture and ensure the availability of a rich pool of IT experts is a boon for the nation. SLIIT has an extensive array of B.Sc. degree programmes both in-house and with prestigious partner universities in UK, Australia, and Canada for students who want to secure a great future. The minimum criteria for entry are 3 local or London GCE Advanced Level passes plus a pass at the aptitude test conducted by the institute. The next aptitude test is on November 1 conducted in English, Sinhala or Tamil at locations in Colombo, Malabe, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle and Matara. Those awaiting results are also eligible to apply on forms that are available on the SLIIT website, www.sliit.lk

SLIIT B.Sc. Honours degree approved by the University Grants Commission have specialties in Information Technology, Computer Systems & Networking and Information Systems and each programme is a course spanning 4 years. For students who seek an overseas qualification, the choice ranges from a 3-year B.Sc. in Information Technology or Computer systems & Networking from Curtin University, Australia or the highly prestigious Sheffield Hallam University, UK renowned for maintaining high standards.

A 3-year Software Engineering course is also available at SHU. Students can opt for two and a half years study at SLIIT completing the final semester in UK. SHU also has B.Eng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering and BBA (Hons) in Business Management, each lasting 3 years that can be completed at SLIIT.

B.Sc. Degrees in IT from several Australian universities make the choice at SLIIT even more attractive. The Australian universities include Monash University, Curtin University, RMIT University, University of Wollongong, Swinburne University, University of South Australia and Deakin University. Students can study for 2 years at SLIIT and complete the course in Australia at the partner university campus. Students also have the opportunity of obtaining BTEC HND (UK) offered by Edexcel International, UK and DIT (SLIIT) Diploma in Information Technology through successful completion of 2 years of study at SLIIT.
University of Southampton, Manchester Metropolitan University, London Metropolitan University, Oxford Brooks University Leeds Metropolitan University and several other universities in UK Edexcel network are also partner universities of SLIIT.

When transferring students to campuses overseas, SLIIT offers their expert guidance and fullest support. At the next intake, students have the opportunity of securing scholarships from an array of options. There are several industry sponsored scholarship schemes and internships available through IT industry giants such as Virtusa and Exetel while the institute itself has performance based scholarship schemes for the deserving students, numbering over 100.

SLIIT is equipped with labs for a range of applications and students have the benefit of a well-equipped gym, a modern tennis court, an outdoor basketball court, plus table tennis, chess and carom facilities as well as a large playground and have the option of joining the team that plays their favourite game.
SLIIT has amply demonstrated that the teaching and the learning ambience the students enjoy has reaped rich dividends. Among the accolades won within the last couple of years are the Asia Pacific ICT Gold Award, National Best Quality Software Gold and Silver Awards, Microsoft Imagine Cup 1st place in 2009 and 1st runner up for previous 2 consecutive years and the Techno 2007 Gold Award.
