Isipathana on top at Zahira 7’s

Isipathana retained the Zahira Invitation Schools Rugby Sevens title by defeating St Peter’s 12-7 in a pulsating final at Longdon Place yesterday. The score remained the same at the breather.

The champions accumulated their points through a goal and try as against a goal by the losers. This was the second successive year that the tournament was conducted where Isipathana came out winners in the inaugural one by beating Royal in the final. CWW Kannangara MMV Borella, a team that has made vast strides in the school rugby arena in recent times, clinched the Plate title when they defeated Royal Panadura.

Action at Zahira rugby 7s at Longdon Place yesterday.

In fact the Borella boys went a step further this year as last year they were the Bowl champions. In qualifying to the Plate segment they put a fine display in the round robin games.

They went down fighting to champions Isipathana but overcame the strong Dharmaraja side that emerged the Bowl champions by routing Prince of Wales in the final. The tournament organized by the Zahira Group of 60’s saw 12 teams contesting. S. Thomas’ who were originally scheduled to participate pulled out as some of their players are training with the youth national pool.

The Thomian absence saw a team from A Goal Academy replacing them. The winning team was awarded a trophy and a cash award of Rs. 50,000/- with the runner up receiving a cash award of Rs. 25,000/-.

Results:
Semi Finals – Bowl – Dharmaraja beat Carey 41-12 and Prince of Wales beat A Goal Academy 17-0. Plate – CWW Kannangara MMV beat St Joseph’s 17-12 and Royal Panadura beat Vidyartha 17-12. Cup – Isipathana beat Zahira 35-10 and St Peter’s beat St Anne’s 33-14.
Finals – Bowl – Dharmaraja beat Prince of Wales 64-0. Plate – CWW Kannangra MMV beat Royal Panadura 29-12. Cup – Isipathana beat St Peter’s 12-7.
