More defence cooperation with India
Sri Lanka and India have reached accord on greater defence co-operation to ensure security in the Indian Ocean region, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle declared on Friday.

PM to represent President in Parliament
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will represent President Chandrika Kumaratunga in Parliament during next week's committee stage debates on the ministries of Defence, Interior and Mass Communication.

No dissolution; CBK to JVP
President Chandrika Kumaratunga has ruled out an immediate dissolution of parliament but indicated early provincial elections ahead of any general election.
Her position has been conveyed to the JVP and her own MPs this week.

Ranil wants defence - or polls
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday set a poser to President Chandrika Kumaratunga -- return the defence portfolio so he may continue the peace process with Tiger guerrillas or pave the way for Parliamentary General Elections.

MSD warns of danger to Anandasangaree's life
The Ministerial Security Division has warned TULF Leader V. Anandasangaree of a possible LTTE threat to his life through an employee at the TULF office working directly under the rebel group's intelligence chief Pottu Amman.


Outgoing Wanni security forces commander Susil Chandrapala being wished by Vavuniya LTTE political wing leader Elilan near the LTTE political wing office. Major General Susil Chandrapala is assuming duties as Jaffna security forces commander.
