Election on the cards?
Rumours were rife in Colombo that an election was most likely after the budget vote is taken on December 18. With President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe unlikely to work out a compromise solution this week, business circles were buzzing with news of an election.

"The UNP wants a general election while the PA prefers provincial polls which are anyway due. Neither party would benefit from parliamentary elections," said an exasperated business analyst. Tomorrow is the deadline in which both sides are due to conclude a power-sharing deal.
