US-Sri Lanka Graphite Summit 2026 at Pera
View(s):The US-Sri Lanka Graphite Summit 2026, an international research and industry event hosted by the University of Peradeniya, was held at its Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) recently.
The summit brought together academics, geologists, mining experts, policymakers, investors, and industry representatives from the United States and Sri Lanka.
The summit focused on advancing research on natural vein graphite; strengthening US-Sri Lanka scientific collaboration in graphite mining, processing, and advanced material technologies; exploring graphite’s role in lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells, and clean-energy technologies; and promoting value addition and sustainable mining practices rather than exporting raw.
Prof Kusali Gamage from the Austin Community College, USA, initiated the concept after winning a NSF-USA grant as a Fulbright specialist. Dr Patrick McNamara, Executive Director of the US-SL Fulbright Commission and Prof Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Director-International Relations, University of Peradeniya coordinated the event.
Vice Chancellor Prof Terence Madhujith, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Ranjith Pallegama, Dean Faculty of Science Prof Sanath Rajapakse, Director-PGIS Professor Nanda Balasooriya, were present at the inauguration ceremony on April 27 at the PGIS Conference Hall.
Scientists, researchers, industry stakeholders, undergraduate and postgraduate students, from both USA and Sri Lanka participated in the summit sharing their knowledge in the graphite industry.
The National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka also collaborated on the event.
