At a time when the world is facing an unprecedented shortage of more than 15 million nurses, countries across the globe are struggling to sustain healthcare systems challenged by aging populations, increasing healthcare demands, and rapidly evolving models of patient care. Long before this global crisis became a major international concern, Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, Founder and CEO of IIHS Multiversity, envisioned a bold future where Sri Lanka would emerge as a leading contributor to the global healthcare workforce through internationally focused nursing education.

For more than two decades, Dr. Edirisinghe has been at the forefront of transforming nursing education in Sri Lanka through his visionary leadership at IIHS Multiversity, redefining the image, standards, and opportunities of the nursing profession. His mission was not merely to produce nurses, but to create “Work-Ready Global Nursing Professionals” who are academically strong, clinically competent, compassionate, technologically adaptable, and internationally employable. Under his leadership, IIHS introduced several groundbreaking milestones including Sri Lanka’s first International Nursing Diploma, first International Nursing Top-Up Degree, first International Master’s Programme in Nursing, and the country’s first Doctorate pathway in Nursing, creating international academic and career opportunities for more than 4,500 Sri Lankan nurses, including many government nursing officers.

One of Dr. Edirisinghe’s most significant contributions has been establishing Sri Lanka’s first articulated international nursing transfer pathways with globally ranked universities such as Deakin University in Australia, Metropolia University in Finland, Coventry University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom — all internationally respected institutions ranked within the QS Top 200–280 global rankings. Through these collaborations, Sri Lankan nursing students gained unprecedented access to world-class education, advanced healthcare systems, international exposure, and global employment opportunities.

Today, the impact of this vision is visible across the world, with more than 2,500 IIHS-trained nurses currently serving in healthcare systems across Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, and several other developed nations, strengthening global healthcare while contributing significantly to Sri Lanka’s economy through foreign income and remittances. Beyond education, IIHS Multiversity has strengthened its international reputation through collaborations and recognitions associated with globally respected healthcare and regulatory organizations including the NHS UK, Care England UK, the General Medical Council (GMC), the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) UK, AHPRA Australia, and Valvira Finland, positioning IIHS as a pioneering Global Health University committed to addressing international healthcare workforce shortages while uplifting healthcare education standards in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe’s contribution extends far beyond institutional success. He has transformed perceptions of nursing in Sri Lanka, elevated the professional status of nurses, and demonstrated that Sri Lankan healthcare professionals can compete confidently on the global stage. Through his leadership, nursing has evolved from a local profession into an internationally respected career pathway filled with opportunity, dignity, and global impact.

His vision continues to inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals who are prepared not only to serve patients, but to serve humanity beyond borders.
