Life back to normal for Kalu following tug of war after peace walk

Kalu – the Lankan dog who alongside Aloka briefly stole the spotlight at the recent Peace Walk found himself at the centre of a rather less peaceful dispute.

The Sunday Times learns that “Kalu”, originally named “Shadow”, who became a minor sensation after briefly appearing to fill in for Aloka alongside Ven Pannakara Thera, had belonged to an individual living in a neighbouring house in Hingula.

Upon the owner passing away about a year and a half ago, the dog had reportedly wandered off and taken shelter at the Hingula Rajamaha Viharaya, where he gradually became close to the nearby residents. Over time, he had settled with a new family, who have since considered themselves his owners.

On the day that the Peace Walk approached the area, Kalu had joined the gathering and had been warmly received. According to the adoptive owners, he was kept under close watch as much as Aloka.

Kalu’s participation, however, quickly won hearts and soon Kalu went viral on television clips and social media. That is when matters took a turn.

The media attention alerted his original owner’s brother and family, who came forward claiming the dog was theirs.

What followed was a series of unsuccessful attempts to take Kalu back ‘home’. In what appeared to be a final effort, they reportedly brought along a child the dog had once been attached to, hoping familiarity would persuade him to return.

The adoptive family, however, alleges that the original owner’s brother attempted to secure the dog by tying him at their residence. Despite these efforts, Kalu seems to have made his own decision.

With the media interest fading, the Sunday Times learns that although he was briefly taken away, Kalu returned the very next day and has resumed his usual life and can be found at mealtimes with his adoptive family.
