Coal unloading persists despite more substandard shipments
View(s):Coal continues to be unloaded for the power plant at Norochcholai, with stocks both from the emergency tender and outstanding shipments from the Trident Chemphar term tender arriving in a steady stream.
Shipment 17—procured via emergency tender from the Indian company Taranjot—was being unloaded on Friday, official sources said. Meanwhile, one ship from Trident is also in anchorage at the outer harbour of the Norochcholai coal jetty, official sources said. Another ship is also due on May 12.
However, authorities are finding it difficult to unload ships at the usual five-day intervals. One vessel recently took eight days, owing to ocean swells.
Shipment 16, that was reportedly brought to Sri Lanka from Indonesia by Trident, was also substandard, the sources said.
The Sunday Times recently reported that two more shipments from controversial coal supplier Trident failed, bringing the total number of consignments confirmed to be off-spec by independent accredited laboratory Cotecna to five.
