Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Stephen Twigg, has acknowledged receipt of a letter sent by the Association of Former Members of Parliament of Sri Lanka (AFMPSL) raising serious concerns regarding the alleged unlawful suspension of the Deputy Secretary General of Parliament and the reported intervention of the Speaker.

The AFMPSL said the CPA Secretary-General’s response had confirmed that the matter has received his serious attention. While noting that ongoing legal proceedings limit the scope for direct intervention, he has assured that the situation will be closely monitored. He further indicated that the concerns raised will be brought to the attention of the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the association said in a statement.

In a communication addressed to the Secretary-General of the CPA, the association highlighted that the suspension was carried out in a manner that is “unlawful, procedurally improper, and contrary to the principles of natural justice and institutional independence.”

Given the gravity of these issues, the association has called upon the CPA to closely observe the situation in Sri Lanka’s Parliament and to take appropriate steps to ensure adherence to democratic principles, the rule of law, and institutional integrity.
