IChemC Hosts Successful Open Day at Malabe Campus

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) successfully hosted its second Open Day on 25 April 2026 at its Malabe campus as part of its enrolment campaign for the upcoming academic year. The event was designed to provide prospective students and parents with comprehensive insights into the degree and diploma programmes offered by its educational arm, the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS).
The occasion was graced by the President of IChemC, Prof. Hema Pathirana, and the Dean of CCS, Prof. Janitha Liyanage, along with senior academic and administrative staff. Prof. Pathirana warmly welcomed the attendees, while Prof. Liyanage provided an overview of IChemC’s history and its significant contributions to the advancement of chemical sciences in Sri Lanka.
An informative presentation was delivered by Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the enrolment campaign, who outlined the range of degree and diploma programmes available. This was followed by an engaging address by Dr. Keerthi Attanayake, who highlighted the academic value of these programmes and the diverse career opportunities available for chemists both locally and internationally.
IChemC offers the BSc Honours in Chemical Science, an academic qualification recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), as well as the four-year Graduateship in Chemistry programme, which serves as a professional qualification. Notably, both programmes are accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), ensuring international recognition.
In addition, the Institute offers a two-year Diploma in Laboratory Technology (DLT) through its Department of Applied Sciences, with specialisations in Clinical Laboratory Technology (CLT), focusing on medical laboratory practices, and Food and Materials Technology (FMT), catering to food and polymer-related industries. Both diploma programmes lead to an NVQ Level 5 qualification upon completion. All programmes are scheduled to commence around mid-May.
Adding a lively touch to the event, IChemC students conducted an entertaining chemistry magic show, which was well received by the audience. The Open Day concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session on enrolment procedures.
Overall, the event was a great success, attracting approximately 150 prospective students and parents, and providing valuable guidance on academic pathways and future career opportunities in the field of chemical sciences.
