Prof Nalin Abeysekera: Gentleman and pedagogue par excellence
View(s):We were saddened to hear of the untimely demise of Professor Nalin Abeysekera (Senior Professor in Management Studies), who had contributed immensely to our society, universities and Motherland.
He was attached to the Department of Marketing Management, Open University of Sri Lanka and was a graduate from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura with a BSc Marketing (special).
He was an author/co-author and reviewer for many international journal articles, conference papers, and books. He completed his PhD in 2013 in Leadership and Marketing. Late Prof Abeysekera, in his attempt to “socialise knowledge” contributed many articles to leading magazines and national newspapers in Sri Lanka on current issues covering economics, education and tourism. He also served as a supervisor for PhD students in management and marketing.
Prof Abeysekera featured extensively in TV programmes to lead and moderate discussions related to education, issues on children and entrepreneurship. He also served on many panels, such as the PhD colloquium, media and IT and tourism.
He was an eminent writer and a regular contributor to our Education Times throughout the years.
He was a gentleman, writer, orator, marketer, leader and management guru, par excellence.
He was an intelligent professor and had graciousness throughout his life.
He was more than a professor; he was a mentor who patiently guided us through the complex maze of economic theory, illuminating the path with exceptional expertise and gentle kindness. We have lost a brilliant economist, but more importantly, a wonderful human being whose kindness, patience, and unwavering belief in his students shaped many futures.
His lectures were not just about notes and exams; he taught his students life lessons that stay forever — patience, wisdom, and how to stand strong even when things are difficult.
He demonstrated that a truly great economist does not just analyse numbers, they understand the value of that which they aggregate, bringing humanity to the ‘dismal science’.
May his soul attain supreme bliss of nibbana!
