Extreme heat to persist while afternoon thundershowers loom
View(s):By Jayanie Madawala
The prevailing extreme heat and strong sunlight will continue while rains or thunder showers could occur in the afternoons, especially in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and Southern Provinces and in Puttalam District, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Early morning misty conditions can also be expected in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and North Central Provinces and in the districts of Galle, Matara and Kurunegala.
The Department has also asked the public to take precautions from temporary, localised strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

Warm weather advisories have been issued for the Northern, North Central, North Western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Eastern Provinces. The Department noted that the heat index—the temperature felt by the human body—is likely to reach the ‘Caution Level.’ It warned that prolonged outdoor activity and exposure to the sun could result in fatigue and heat cramps.
The public is advised to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activities.
Meanwhile, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Deputy General Manager (System Control) Buddhika Samarasekara stated that electricity demand has surged significantly due to the heat. Despite demand frequently exceeding 3,000 megawatts and putting pressure on the national grid, he assured that a 45-day plan is in place to maintain an uninterrupted power supply.
