The Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe whether any irregularities or unlawful acts had occurred during coal procurement purchases is planning to invite the public to provide information related to its investigation from next week.

The commission is due to move into its newly established office at the Aluthkade MCC Building (Adhikarana Piyasa) tomorrow (27). It has already written to the Inspector General of Police asking him to assign officers needed to establish a Police team to aid the commission’s investigation.

The Attorney General has been requested to assign several officers within his department to assist the commission’s inquiries. The Presidential Secretariat has already assigned clerical and other office staff for the commission, and provided necessary furniture and other equipment.

Commission Secretary P V Bandulasena told the Sunday Times yesterday that the commission hopes to commence its probe next week after preliminary matters are concluded.

The commission, which was appointed on April 17, has been tasked with completing its probe and submitting its report to the president within six months.

It comprises Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga (Chairman), Court of Appeal Judge Adithya Patabendige and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somarathna.
