A senior military officer expressed dissatisfaction to Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Dileepa Peiris following his statement in open court this week, accusing certain Army officers of obstructing the Easter Sunday attack investigation.

The Sunday Times learns that an officer from the Army’s Legal Division had first met the ASG and informed him that the senior officer wished to speak to him.

The conversation, held over the phone, had initially been cordial but had grown heated when the officer had claimed the ASG had embarrassed the army through his statements in court indicating that the military was not being supportive of investigations into the Easter attacks. Though the officer had argued that the military had been supportive of the probe, the ASG had countered, saying this was not the case.

At one point, the officer is alleged to have told ASG Peiris that the military may have to “complain to the president” regarding his behaviour if he continued making such statements in court.

ASG Peiris had alleged that Military Intelligence had been providing funds to suspects who have been arrested over the attacks to obtain legal assistance, insisting this was not right. The AG’s Department official had also told the officer that the AG intends to inform the court regarding persons who refuse to assist investigations into the attack and will summon them before court.

The Sunday Times understands that Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe had been made aware of the conversation between the military officer and ASG Peiris.
