Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detectives have taken down an eight-page statement during a nearly four-hour interview with former First Lady Maithree Wickramasinghe with regard to their probe into former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s UK visit to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton, where she was conferred an honorary professorship.
Five CID officers arrived at former President Wickremesinghe’s private residence at 5th Lane in Colombo at about 9 am on Friday. The CID team stayed at the residence till about 3.00pm, taking down Ms Wickramasinghe’s statement.
The CID team which arrived on Friday included the probe’s lead detective, Inspector Nalinda Herath, and a female CID officer.
The case into the UK visit, where Mr Wickremesinghe is alleged to have misused Rs 16.6 million in state funds, is due to be taken up again on Wednesday at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Meanwhile, social activist Oshala Herath, this week, made public the invitation letter he claims the University of Wolverhampton had sent to Sri Lanka’s then High Commissioner to the UK, Saroja Sirisena, inviting her to attend the university’s graduation ceremony.
Mr Herath said the invitation letter had been released to him following a request made under the UK’s Freedom of Information Act.
Former President Wickremesinghe, who is recuperating after heart surgery, has thanked those who have sent him wishes for an early recovery.
In a special statement issued yesterday, as the VIII (Eighth) Executive President of Sri Lanka, he says he has received many telephone calls as well as messages inquiring about his health and wishing him good health.
“Some have held island-wide religious observances wishing me good health. These wishes have given me strength on my road to recovery,” he said.
The former President said that United National Party (UNP) supporters in particular have been a source of strength to him and extended his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who sent their wishes to him.
