The Sunday Times report finally brings light to Maspanna village hit by Ditwah

Three months after the Ditawah cyclone cut off the electricity supply to villagers of Galaniha area in the village of Maspanna in the Uva Paranagama electorate, power was finally being fully restored

This follows a report in the Sunday Times of February 15 that highlighted the plight of the villagers.

Uva Paranagama Gampaha Korala Development Foundation chairman D. B. Ratnayake told the Sunday Times that hundreds of families including choolchildren had faced much hardship due to power outages and blocked roads.

Badulla District Additional Secretary Chaminda Weerasinghe, acting on the Sunday Times report had alerted the Badulla CEB about the plight of the people.

Following this a new electricity transformer and electricity poles were installed and after all these months electricity was restored this week.

Villagers had also appealed for the restoration of the roads that were badly damaged following cyclone Ditwah.

The Uva Paranagama Pradeshiya Sabha this week at its monthly meeting expressed its gratitude to the Sunday Times for exposing the plight of the village.

UNP member Kanchana Swarnamali Malwattamenaviya had raised questions about authorities waiting for media exposure to attend to the plight of the viallgers.

She also questioned about the delay in paying compensation to those affected in the area.
