By L.B. Senaratne
A plan to fully restore the Kandy Courts complex, damaged by flooding after Cyclone Ditwah in November last year, was discussed at a meeting convened by Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara with judges, parliamentarians, and officials on Thursday.
The meeting took place during the minister’s visit to assess the restoration process.

Thousands of files and court documents, mainly from basement record rooms, were destroyed in the flooding.
Immediate measures discussed included restoring electricity supplies and reinstalling air conditioners.
The minister advised court officials to set up temporary record rooms in containers to store the large volume of files from ongoing and concluded cases.
He said steps should be taken to ease the burden of litigants by using available resources and cleaning the entire complex.
The minister also attended a meeting arranged by parliamentarian Thusari Jayasinghe with lawyers. Among the topics discussed was the overcrowding of prisons.
Minister Nanayakkara said laws are being drafted to allow suspects to be placed under house arrest instead of being sent to remand prison. He said a committee under the guidance of Justice Yasantha Kodagoda is working out the modalities.
Ms Jayasinghe told the Sunday Times that the minister instructed officials to closely monitor renovation work and raise issues at the district coordinating committee. Senior attorneys Lal Wijenaike, Shantha Ranayake PC, T. Markalanda, and others were present, with District Secretary T.K. Pieris conducting the meeting.
