The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) recently commenced a multi-agency field investigation in the seas off the North Western province on the use of tractor-mounted winches for ma-del (beach seine) fishing, following protests by environmentalists and some others that the practice was harmful.
Senior scientist at NARA Aruna Mahipala, who was among those taking part in the study, said that the study is being conducted due to protests against the use of winches. The study will be conducted in relation to 140 fishing villages in the Puttlam District.
The review will examine the latest socio-economic impacts as well as the effects on fish biomass by the use of the winches.
