The Colombo Fraud Bureau (CFB) has informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court that it has yet to receive advice from the Attorney General on whether to name Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe and two others as suspects in the case involving the alleged fraudulent leasing of a building belonging to the National Workers’ Congress in Dehiwala using a forged deed.

The CFB explained this to Mount Lavinia Magistrate Pasan Amarasena when the case was taken up recently. The CFB told the court that investigations would begin as soon as AG’s advice was received.

Investigations were launched following a complaint made by Dayaji Amarasinghe of Kirulapone. Lawyers for the aggrieved party had requested Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe and Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal be named suspects in the case involving the fraud of Rs 3.6 million through the leasing of the building. This was on the grounds that Mr Samarasinghe had allegedly signed the deed as the lessor while the other two had signed as the tenants.

Magistrate Amarasena ordered police to obtain advice from the AG and inform the court of the matter on the next court date on June 12.

Last week the Sunday Times report on the case inadvertently referred to Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe as Mahinda Samarasinghe
