A fire that burned for nearly 12 days has damaged the Maiyawa tank system within the Anawilundawa Ramsar Wetland, according to wildlife officials.
They said that the fire had spread from a vicinity close to the cultural centre and spread to the Maiyawa tank system.
Wildlife officials believe the fire may have been set off by somebody and spread due to he prevailing dry conditions destroying about an acre of land in the Maiyawa Lake area.
The Anawilundawa Ramsar Wetland is the largest Ramsar wetland in the Puttalam district.
A coordinated effort by wildlife and government officials, local residents, and the Chilaw and Arachchikattuwa emergency teams successfully extinguished the fire before it reached the wetlands.
Officials said some people use the area to consume alcohol and the fire may have been started on one such instance.
