The government will prepare a National Policy for Medical Education to improve standards to an international level, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Madhura Senevirathna said.

He said that a discussion was held with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuirya, who is also the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, as well as officials of the University Grants Commission (UGC), KDU medical faculty representatives and other related officials on the matter.

The revamp of medical education will be part of a wider revamping of the higher education system in the country.

He said an assessment of the needs in the medical field will also be done as part of the revamp.

The objective is to improve both medical education as well as the professional standards of those in the medical professions, he said.
