Norway to support rebuild of schools devastated by Cyclone Ditwah
View(s):State Secretary of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik on a visit to Sri Lanka this week joined UNICEF at Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya — one of many schools affected by Cyclone Ditwah floods.
Norway is supporting the UN Humanitarian Priorities Plan (HPP) through UNICEF, enabling more than 100,000 children to receive critical services: restoring schools so learning can continue, providing nutrition support, ensuring access to safe water, and improving sanitation and hygiene facilities.
Mr Kravik was accompanied by the UN Resident Representative in Colombo Marc-André Franche and Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madhura Senevirathna.
The visit was to assess the assistance that can be given or rebuild the partially damaged schools as well as build new schools in place of those that have to be relocated.
In place of the 30 schools that have to be relocated, the Norwegian Minister pledged to assist in constructing temporary schools and later to build permanent structures.
He also pledged to assist in providing school equipment for classrooms. (DW)
