The University of Vavuniya along with the Northern Province Tourism Board (NPTB) has prepared a strategic plan to develop the tourism industry in the province.

The university’s Business Faculty through its Industry Community Interaction Cell (ICIC) conducted a joint assignment with the NPTB to prepare the Northern Province Tourism Development Strategic Plan after conducting a series of district-wide consultations followed by a two-day provincial strategic planning workshop.

Business Faculty Dean Professor Yogarajah Nanthagopen said participants reviewed existing tourism attractions that included cultural and religious heritage sites, historical landmarks, coastal and island destinations, lagoons, wildlife sanctuaries, tanks and scenic natural landscapes, where they assessed current development gaps and future opportunities.

He also highlighted that the Northern Province Development Strategic Plan Workshop held between December 18-19 synthesized district-level findings and focused on defining priority development areas, strategic interventions and potential projects.

Overall stakeholders at the workshop reached a consensus that tourism development in the Northern Province must be sustainable, inclusive and community-centered. It was also agreed that tourism development must ensure environmental protection, preserve cultural identity, create livelihood generation for local communities and coordinate implementation.

Consultations were conducted across a diverse range of stakeholders including representatives from the Divisional Secretariats, local authorities, government agencies, community organisations, tourism stakeholders and the private sector.

Prof Nanthagopen also explained that all stakeholder inputs will be incorporated into the forthcoming Northern Provincial Tourism Development Strategic Plan, which would provide a roadmap for balanced and responsible tourism growth across the region.
