Bridging Borders in Science: IChemC and JCU Chart a New International Degree Pathway

A preliminary discussion was held at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) with Ms. Shruti Srinivasan, Regional Manager – Strategic Partnership, Marketing, Future Students and Admissions of James Cook University (JCU), Australia, together with Mr. David Samuel, to explore the establishment of an international degree pathway programme. IChemC, the professional body for Chemistry in Sri Lanka and a leading institution in chemical sciences education and professional training, has played a pivotal role in advancing chemical education, research, and industry engagement at the national level. James Cook University, a globally recognised Australian public university renowned for excellence in science, biomedical research, and tropical health, contributes strong international academic standing, advanced research infrastructure, and extensive global partnerships.
The proposed collaboration will introduce a 1+2 model, enabling students to complete the first year of study at IChemC and the subsequent two years at JCU in Australia, leading to an internationally recognised qualification. The programme is expected to provide access to modern teaching and research facilities, scholarship opportunities, and high academic standards across several majors, including Chemistry, Biomedical Science, and Biostatistics. The Dean of IChemC and members of the academic panel participated in the initial discussions, focusing on curriculum alignment, quality assurance standards, credit transfer mechanisms, student mobility pathways, and long-term institutional collaboration. The meeting marks an important step toward strengthening international academic cooperation and expanding global opportunities for Sri Lankan students.
