Parliament committee discusses extending teacher exam deadline
View(s):The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education, Manpower and Human Capital, which met this week in parliament, discussed the possibility of providing opportunities to graduates who obtained their degree certificates after 10.02.2023 to sit for the competitive exam for the recruitment of graduates to the Sri Lanka Teaching Service for 2026.
Accordingly, a group of graduates who attended the committee meeting pointed out that although their group has been in the public service for more than 10 years, only those who completed their degrees before 2023.02.10 are eligible to participate in this limited competitive examination, so about 150 people are not able to participate in the competitive exam.
The participants said that this group has also exceeded the age limit for the open competitive exam; they have now had to retire from their current positions in the public service. They requested that the necessary steps be taken to provide an opportunity to graduates who obtained their degree certificates after 2023.02.10 to appear for this exam, since the Covid-19 pandemic delayed them receiving degree certificates.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who attended the committee, asked the officers present to consider extending the date.
Officials representing the Education Ministry pointed out that they have to act according to the methodology published in the gazette notification in accordance with legal instructions.
After a lengthy discussion, Committee Chair Hesha Withanage pointed out that if these graduates are not recruited at this time, there may be an issue regarding their age during re-enlistment, so the committee would request the Education Minister to consider extending the validity date of the degree in a manner that does not hinder the application process.
The committee also considered and approved the annual reports of the Sabaragamuwa University, the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Indigenous Medical University, and the Wayamba University for the years 2022, 2023.
