Tri-forces and police in rescue operations amidst rain, waist-deep water and falling earth
View(s):By Dilushi Wijesinghe
The tri-forces and police launched rapid island-wide operations to rescue stranded families and safeguard vulnerable communities as Cyclone Ditwah swept across the country, unleashing torrential rains, floods and landslides,
Military teams were deployed across multiple districts including Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu.
Flash floods and earth slips cut off key roads, marooned villages, and left many trapped within homes and vehicles as water levels surged. Rescue personnel worked through relentless rain, waist-deep waters and unstable terrain to reach affected residents. In Kandy and Matale, military personnel used boats and ropes to evacuate families from inundated homes, while landslide-prone areas saw evacuations as earth mounds continued to fall.
Police units also supported evacuation efforts, diverted traffic from unsafe routes and coordinated with local authorities to establish temporary shelters. The rescue and relief operations were coordinated between the Disaster Management Centre Army, Navy, Air Force and police.
