Train services remain crippled with extensive damage to some lines, Railway Department officials said.

The General Superintendent of Railways was not available for comment but the Railway Department Media Spokesperson, Asanka Samarasinghe, said out of the 100 daily journeys, only about twelve have recommenced.

He said operations have started on the coastal line from Colombo to Galle and on the Kelani Valley route, as well as on the Negombo line.

Railways Chef Engineer Priyantha Deegala said that the Balanayake railway line has been washed away into the Mahaweli river and the railway lines leading to Radella, Uduwara and Ambewela have been extensively damaged.

He said there have been reports of tree falls and landslides that have obstructed and damaged the tracks extensively. He said it was difficult to deploy teams to assess the situation as some locations could not be reached.

He said teams would be sent as soon as water levels recede and repair work would begin on the tracks.
