Heavy rains did not deter thousands of people in the North and East from gathering in one-time cemeteries of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) across the two provinces to commemorate their loved ones on Heroes’ Day, known as Maveerar Naal.

In Kanagapuram war cemetery of Kilinochchi, amidst heavy rains, thousands turned up for the collective event. Brother of the slain former LTTE Political Head S.P. Thamilchelvan lighted the oil lamp.

In Jaffna, similar events were held at the Kopay war cemetery, University of Jaffna, Nallur Common Memorial, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, Kodikaamam, and Uduththurai of Vadamarachchi.

In the East, the commemorative events were quite dampened due to heavy downpours the province received since early this week. In Thamabalagama of Trincomalee, youths organised an event in front of the Pillayaar temple.

In Batticaloa, Mavadi Munmaari war cemetery saw relatives of war dead and loved ones of fallen cadres gathered to mark the annual event. In Ampara, local youths organised a public event at Kanchikudichcharu war cemetery.

Valvettithurai, the one-time heartland of the LTTE movement, saw several events being organised by various groups and political parties to mark the day. A remembrance ceremony was organised in front of the first fallen cadre of LTTE who is known by his nom de guerre Col Shankar.
