Three individuals– two men and a woman– were taken into custody last evening during an alleged attempt to flee the country, amid investigations into the recent fatal shooting in Kotahena believed to be tied to underworld figure Balachandran Pushparaj, alias “Pukudu Kanna.”

The trio was arrested in Jaffna on suspicion of preparing to illegally cross into India, police sources said. The woman among the detained was reportedly planning to take her pet abroad.  A special team from Colombo was sent to question the suspects who were being held at the Jaffna Police Station.   Police said a car linked to the group has also been located and is being assessed for forensic evidence.

The arrests come less than 24 hours after a 43-year-old man was gunned down along 16th Lane, Kotahena, on Thursday night (7). According to police, a group of assailants arrived in a car, opened fire, and fled the scene.   The victim, who later succumbed to his injuries, was identified as an associate of Pukudu Kanna.

Preliminary reports suggest that a 9mm firearm was used in the attack. Police have launched an extensive manhunt to apprehend others linked to the shooting as investigations continue.
