Elephant drive ends up with flattened crops
View(s):By Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe
Paddy farmers expressed displeasure over the government’s elephant drive as their crops get destroyed when elephants stampede across cultivated land.
The farmers of Mahakumbukkadawala Mohoriya complained that a herd of 30 elephants have destroyed 50 acres of freshly cultivated paddy land within three days, laying waste to months of their toil protecting their crops.
They accused the Department of Wildlife Conservation of chasing away the elephants from one place to another and making another set of people deal with the issue and demanded for a sustainable solution for this problem.

Farmers lament over destroyed crops
The farmers said that the Mahakumbukkadawala Divisional Secretary attempted to resolve the issue, but the wildlife officials disrupted her work by removing her.
The farmers alleged that the Department of Wildlife Conservation is only deceiving people by orchestrating elephant drives, while they should be addressing the key issues faced by people and elephants.
