Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Devale Daminda Bandara Udurawana came second with 50 votes and the third, Natha Devale Basnayake Nilame A.W.S. Bandaranayake, received 13 votes.
The election was presided over by the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs K. M. Senaratne at the Senkadagala Bauddha Mandiraya.
The Diyawadana Nilame told a media conference that during his previous term the Dalada Maligawa has turned to be a popular destination visited by tourists. He said more than 15,000 visitors arrive at the Maligawa daily thereby bypassing average daily visitors to the Taj Mahal.
This is Nilanga Dela’s third term as Diyawadana Nilame, having been first appointed in 2005. A product of Nalanda College, Colombo, he is the son of Dickson Sarathchandra Dela who was the Sri Lankan former High Commissioner to Maldives and former Governor of Sabaragamuwa & Northern Province.
He will be one of the longest-serving Diyawadana Nilames in modern times.
