Dr. Asoka de Silva, Director of the National Institute of Education (NIE) and chief architect of Sri Lanka’s upcoming education reforms, visited St. Benedict’s College (SBC) to discuss the alignment of the school’s 21st Century Learning Initiative with the 2026 National Education Reforms.

The discussions, held at the College, brought together the school’s management team, grade supervisors, and representatives from the Old Boys’ Union, Development Fund, and Welfare Society. Also present were education consultant Mr. Ranjith Dediwalage, Prof. Prasad Jayaweera, and officials from Mogo Studios — Dakshina Wijayakulathilaka, Sachitha Kalingamudali, and Ravihara Perera.

Dr. de Silva was briefed on the College’s groundbreaking STEM Centre, opened in January 2025 after three years of preparation. The facility, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, introduced STEM as a core subject for Grade 6 students. Commending the initiative as “a giant step no other school has yet taken,” Dr. de Silva said St. Benedict’s could serve as a national model for education reform.

A key outcome of the meeting was the announcement of a strategic partnership with Mogo Studios, a subsidiary of Derana, to train teachers in new creative technology modules to be introduced for Grades 7 and 8 in 2026:

  • Shoot & Shine – Digital Video Production and Editing
  • Story in Motion – Basic Animation Principles
  • Game Craft – Introductory Game Development

The partnership underscores SBC’s leadership in innovative education and its readiness to contribute to Sri Lanka’s evolving learning landscape through world-class digital and STEM-based teaching.
