The Education Ministry has identified 1,502 government schools with less than 50 students, and is in the process of restructuring them.

The plans include transferring students and teachers from these schools to the closest schools with a higher student population, a senior Education Ministry official said.

He said that if the students/teachers are within walking distance from the current school, and will need to take a bus once they move to a new school, the government will provide the necessary transport as well as a transport allowance to both parties.

He said some schools will remain if there are no big schools in the region to transfer the teachers and students to.

The changes will be made in collaboration with the provincial educational authorities and zonal education offices.

He said an islandwide survey on all schools in the 309 educational zones is nearing completion, and the entire restructuring plan for the sector will be done based on the results of the survey.
