It was established with the intention of providing education and skills development to children with hearing and visual impairments.  Currently, there are two schools operating in Ratmalana and one in Jaffna known as the Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind.

The three schools operate as government assisted schools with the State supporting with an approved number of teachers for each school.  The cost of maintaining, developing the infrastructure, adding value to education and providing hostel and meals to students are all financed through generous donations from sponsors and well-wishers.  The entire education, board & lodging are provided free of charge for all students in the schools.

The two schools in Ratmalana recently received a substantial donation in excess of Rs. 18 millionfrom Lion Rudolf Shwan and Lion Heinz-Gunther Schumacher and Lions Club of Westerwald, Germany. This generous donation enabled the repair and restoration of several dilapidated buildings thereby serving a long-felt need of both schools in Ratmalana.  The repair work carried out was aimed at ensuring the safety and comfort of students as well as staff.

The generous donors were introduced to the school by Dr. Gayani Von Heimendahl who was responsible for personally overseeing the renovations and improvements.

The CSDB is grateful to the Lions movement and the donors from Germany for extending their support to both schools at this critical juncture.  This will certainly go a long way in enabling the less fortunate children of Sri Lanka to secure their future through quality education despite their disadvantaged position.
