A new chapter in Sri Lanka’s educational and cultural journey was inaugurated yesterday with the grand opening of the Sapientia Language Institute (SLI), the country’s first dedicated Italian language institute featuring a qualified and experienced native Italian teacher.

The elegant ceremony, held in Colombo, was attended by members of the diplomatic community, senior government officials, and prominent figures from the academic and business sectors.

The initiative is spearheaded by Deum Consulting (Pvt) Ltd, under the leadership of Mrs. Deepani Gunathilaka and Mrs. Devika Perera, who envisioned Sapientia as a centre of excellence promoting not only the study of the Italian language but also the appreciation of Italy’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Ms. Valentina Gonsal, Head of the Institute, in her address, emphasised the importance of linguistic and cultural education as a bridge between nations, highlighting Sapientia’s role in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Italy.

Among the distinguished speakers was Prof. G. L. Peiris, former Minister of Education and Foreign Affairs, who delivered a speech commending the establishment of the Institute and its contribution to educational and cultural exchange.

Under the academic guidance of its Italian Head of Studies, Sapientia offers CEFR-aligned Italian language courses ranging from beginner to advanced levels, with the long-term goal of becoming an authorised examination centre for internationally recognised certifications such as CILS, CELI, PLIDA, and CERT.IT.

The Institute also announced a complimentary Italian language training initiative for officers of several key state institutions, including the Sri Lanka Tourism Police, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka Customs, Tourism Promotion Bureau, Export Development Board, and the Board of Investment, recognising their pivotal role in enhancing Sri Lanka’s engagement with Italy and the broader European community.

The evening concluded with a reception attended by dignitaries, diplomats, and institutional representatives, celebrating the launch of an initiative that aspires to make Colombo a regional hub for Italian language and culture.

With the opening of Sapientia Language Institute, Sri Lanka takes a meaningful step toward deepening its cultural and educational ties with Italy — reaffirming that language remains one of the most powerful instruments of connection between nations.
