A special appreciation programme was held in parliament this week for the 52 newly elected members of the National Board of the Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs for the 2025-2027, coinciding with International Youth Day on August 12.

It was attended by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.

It was organised by the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth and attended by the Deputy Chair of Committees Hemali Weerasekara, and Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth Eranga Gunasekara. The newly elected members were welcomed by the speaker by a statement in the chamber. Afterwards, the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth provided them with an opportunity to visit significant places of parliament.

At the beginning of the special appreciation programme, the members were welcomed by members of parliament and members of the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth.

PM Amarasuriya said that it was a great achievement that women members were elected to the National Board for the first time in history. She emphasised the need to change the historically constructed discourse on youth and create a new discourse with a new approach, and further expressed her views by urging the gathering to utilise this opportunity.

Speaker Wickramaratne said a great responsibility is entrusted to these new members to provide leadership.

An open discussion was held for members to present their ideas, suggestions, and issues, followed by a presentation of awards.

The deputy co-chairs of the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth, members including MPs, Director (Legislative Services) and Acting Director (Communications) and Secretary of the Parliamentary Caucus for Youth M Jayalath Perera, Chairman/Director General at National Youth Services Council, Attorney-at-Law Supun Wijeratne, and others participated.
