Education Ministry on lookout for ‘fraudulent’ degrees

The Education Ministry will crack down on fraudulent Bachelor of Education degrees offered by private education institutes, Deputy Education Minister Madura Seneviratne said.

He said that some private institutions get the permission of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and commence degree courses, hold only online classes and hand over a degree in one and half years instead of the three years needed to obtain such a degree.

He said that after this, the degree holders get teaching appointments even though they are not fully qualified.

He added that the Ministry would look into this and stop the granting of such degrees fraudulently. (DWI)
