New Zealand University Pathways for A/L Mathematics and Bio-Science Students at GISM Campus!
View(s):For decades, Sri Lankan students sitting for Mathematics and Bio Science streams at Advanced Level (A/L) examinations have faced the challenge of limited state university placements, especially in Engineering and Science. This long-standing bottleneck has left many bright students unable to follow their aspirations of becoming engineers, scientists, or medical professionals, with only a handful of private options available locally.
The Graduate Institute of Science and Management (GISM) has introduced a pathway to overcome this challenge through its partnership with Massey University in New Zealand. Massey, renowned worldwide for its strengths in Engineering, Science, Agriculture and Business offers Sri Lankan students access to internationally recognised degrees, advanced laboratory facilities, and strong industry linkages. This collaboration provides not just an education, but a springboard to global career opportunities.

Why New Zealand for higher education?
New Zealand is a world-renowned agricultural nation, exporting dairy and agricultural products to the global market. Its universities combine Agriculture, Horticulture, Bioscience, Engineering, Management and Computing in a blended model of education, ensuring graduates are both academically strong and industry-ready. Thus, New Zealand has become an ideal destination for higher education, particularly in Engineering and Applied Science fields. Its universities are globally ranked, and the country is known for producing highly employable graduates. With job-oriented training, graduates gain industry exposure, making them attractive to employers worldwide.
Why GISM?
GISM offers affordable and quality pathway programmes by allowing students to start their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees locally and save money before transferring to New Zealand. For example, an Engineering student can save over 16 million rupees by completing the first two years at GISM in Sri Lanka. The Engineering curriculum is aligned with international standards, ensuring a smooth transfer to a New Zealand university. Students can begin right after O/Ls or A/Ls, complete their first two years at GISM, and then finish their degree, work and settle in New Zealand.

Key Advantages of the GISM Pathway
- Affordable and structured: Huge savings through GISM’s overseas pathway model
- Global recognition: Degrees from New Zealand are internationally recognised
- Industry demand: Employers in NZ and beyond value Massey graduates
- Job-oriented training: Blended education model ensures employability
- Proven success: GISM students excel in university and industry thanks to strong initial training
Meeting Aspirations
For many A/L students, the dream of becoming engineers, IT specialists, or scientists often fades due to limited options in Sri Lanka. GISM reignites this dream by creating an accessible bridge to international education.
Prof. G. G. Senaratne, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, GISM, emphasises:
“At GISM, we recognise the untapped potential of Sri Lankan students. Our partnership with Massey university of New Zealand creates opportunities not just for higher education but for meaningful careers and global exposure.”

Ms. Pudara Randini Perera, a New Zealand Pathway student of GISM, recently graduated with First Class Honours in Mechatronic Engineering. She began her studies with a Diploma and Higher Diploma at GISM in Sri Lanka before transferring to New Zealand to complete her degree.
Future Possibilities
Several Sri Lankan students have already transferred from GISM to Massey university in New Zealand and secured rewarding careers. With rising demand for engineers, scientists, IT professionals, and agricultural experts worldwide, students who pursue this pathway are equipped to contribute to tomorrow’s innovations.
A Call to Students and Parents
Especially, A/L Mathematics and Bio Science students have great opportunities beyond the limitations of the local system. By starting at GISM, students gain an affordable, structured route into world-class degree programmes and global careers. Parents can be confident their children are supported in Sri Lanka before transitioning abroad, ensuring both academic excellence and financial feasibility.
Sri Lanka New Zealand Friendship Forum (SNFF)
GISM Campus and Massey University, New Zealand, together with the esteemed presence of His Excellency, the High Commissioner of New Zealand to Sri Lanka, officially launched the Sri Lanka–New Zealand Friendship Forum (SNFF) for Education, Research and Development (R&D) in Colombo this year. The Forum is expected to serve as a platform for collaboration in education, research, and sustainable development between the two nations. GISM is confident that this initiative will not only deepen the bonds of friendship but also foster innovation and contribute meaningfully to academic and research advancement in Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
