Indian delegation visits Sri Lanka for history congress

The Peradeniya University hosted the third session of the History Congress, with the largest foreign Indian delegation visiting Sri Lanka. The congress took place on August 22 and 23.

“The congress was the zenith of Indian-Sri Lankan academic relations and helped develop social cultural relations, as well as enhancing diplomatic relations between India and Sri Lanka,” Prof Ramini Hettiarachchi said.

Chief guest at the event was Minister of Public Affairs A H M H Abayarathna. The event was supported by the Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof Terrance Madhujith and Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Peradeniya Dr Prabath Ekanayake.

Prof Rohitha Dassanayake said 85 research papers were submitted as part of the programme on different themes.

Prof Hettiarachchi said the aim of the congress was to develop academic dialogue between India and Sri Lanka.

She also said many famous Indian scholars were present at the event and included names like Prof Chalapath Rao, Prof C Chandrasekra and Prof V Gunasekera. Several Indian archeologists also graced the event, she said.

Prof Hettiarachchi added that the University of Colombo, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Ruhunu University, University of Kelaniya and Rajarata University joined the congress by sending in their scholars.

She highlighted that the congress addressed 4 major themes; Environment and sustainability, science and technology, histography and cross cultural studies and economics and globalisation.

The congress had an interesting dialogue on geopolitics and the security dilemma, she said.

The delegation visited the cultural triangle and Sigiriya, she added.  (PW)
