Scholarships, schoolbooks for children of parliament staff

He said opportunities will be provided for children to develop their minds through the upcoming new educational reforms.
He was speaking at a ceremony in parliament to award scholarships, schoolbooks, and equipment for parliamentary staff members’ children.
This programme was organised by the Parliamentary Staff Welfare and Special Projects Committee.
Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General Chaminda Kularatne, and Assistant Secretary-General Hansa Abeyrathne also participated.
587 books sets were distributed to children of 375 staff members.
Scholarships were awarded to children who obtained cut-off marks at the Grade 5 Scholarship Exam, to those who excelled at the GCE Ordinary Level Exam at the first attempt, and to those who, while continuing school education, won national and international competitions in cultural, sports, and aesthetic fields.
Mrs Rohanadeera said the programme had been carried out continuously over many years and the success achieved year after year.
Mr Abeyrathne, Chairman of the Staff Welfare and Special Projects Committee said that education is an investment and that it is a privilege to be a shareholder in that investment. He also recalled that this programme, initiated in 1996, has been able to continue uninterrupted amidst challenges.
