Empowering educators The Role of the Staff Development Centre at SLIIT
View(s):The Staff Development Centre (SDC) of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the teaching and professional capabilities of academic and administrative staff within the institution and beyond. As a recognised hub for academic development, the SDC is committed to cultivating reflective, innovative, and effective educators who contribute to the advancement of higher education in Sri Lanka.
The SDC at SLIIT stands as the only institution in Sri Lanka accredited by both the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), UK, and ISO 9001:2015 standards. This dual accreditation underscores the Centre’s commitment to international benchmarks in quality, consistency, and educational development.
Under the leadership of Professor Colin N. Peiris, Director of the SDC and Dean of Academic Development and Quality Assurance at SLIIT, the Centre has become a benchmark for excellence in staff training and academic development. The Centre also benefits from the strong support and active involvement of SLIIT’s senior management, particularly the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lalith Gamage, whose visionary leadership and guidance ensure that the Centre’s initiatives align with the broader strategic goals of the university and international standards of educational excellence.
To date, over 350 academics from SLIIT and other higher education institutions across Sri Lanka have successfully completed the programme. These professional development initiatives are conducted across all SLIIT branches and campuses throughout the country, ensuring consistent standards and accessibility for educators regardless of their location.
Importantly, the sessions are delivered by renowned academics and leading professionals from the industry, ensuring that participants benefit from both academic rigor and real-world relevance.
A hallmark of the programme is its annual award ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of its participants and recognises their commitment to professional growth. The event also serves as a platform to strengthen collaboration and community among academics.
The SDC continues to evolve by integrating current trends in education technology, promoting continuous professional development (CPD), and expanding opportunities for academic leadership training. With its strong foundation and visionary leadership, the Staff Development Centre at SLIIT remains a driving force in shaping competent, confident, and future-ready educators in Sri Lanka.
