Schools to be checked and cleaned for mosquito breeding sites
View(s):A programme aimed at preventing the spread of Dengue fever, Chikungunya and other mosquito borne diseases in schools will be launched to safeguard students and teachers from contracting such illnesses at schools, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said.
He said that in 25 percent of the cases where children have got Dengue or Chikungunya, it was found that they had been bitten by mosquitoes while in school. Mosquito breeding sites have been discovered in about 50 percent of schools.
The deputy minister said preventive measures will be carried out under the Clean Sri Lanka programme, with health authorities including Public Health Inspectors. The programme will cover around 11,000 government schools across the country. The first phase will include an inspection of schools to identify mosquito breeding sites. This will be followed by clearing programmes.
Provincial Councils too have been informed to join in the programmes.
“With the onset of the monsoons, there will be an increase in mosquito-borne diseases and hence this programme is important,” he said. (DW)
