Cabinet approval to amend Universities Act

The Cabinet has granted approval to amend the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, citing “inconveniences erupting due to ambiguity in the sections of the act” related to the appointment of individuals to key administrative posts in state universities.

The planned amendment seeks to clarify the qualifications required for the appointment of Deans and Heads of Faculty roles.

The government states that inconsistencies in the interpretation of Section 49(1) which pertains to the appointment of Deans and Section 51(1) which deals with the appointment of Heads of Faculty have led to procedural confusion.

The Universities Act was last amended in 2016 under Act No. 17 of 2016.

The Legal Draftsman’s Department has been instructed to prepare a draft bill to amend the existing legislation.
