Government committee to review Grade 5 Scholarship continuation
View(s):The government plans to appoint a committee to look into whether to continue the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination after 2029, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne informed Parliament on Friday (20).
He said committee will be appointed in 2028 and added that the government has no plans to immediately scrap the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, and that it will continue until 2029.
The committee will study the matter and submit its recommendations on whether to continue holding the examination after 2029. He made these remarks in answer to a question posed by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.
The Department of Examinations has been instructed to conduct a study on the exam and structuring the examination papers to minimise stress caused to students.
The government will consider both the report submitted by the committee to be appointed in 2028 as well as the study conducted by the Examinations Department before deciding whether to continue the examination beyond 2029, he informed the House.
The Examinations Department is already in the process of drafting a list of recommendations aimed at reducing exam stress on students, he said. (SJ)
