Mahamaya Girls’ College, Nugegoda attend student parliament
View(s):Parliament’s Chairperson of Committees Hemali Weerasekara, addressing the Student Parliament of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Nugegoda, said that the Student Parliament offered a valuable platform for children to gain experience and training to contribute to governance and policy making in the future.
She was speaking at the inaugural session of the Mahamaya Girls’ College Student Parliament held recently at the Old Parliament Chamber.
The Deputy Chairperson of Committees pointed out that the culturally ingrained image of women in the country, societal perceptions of women, lack of training and experience, and the burden of family responsibilities falling predominantly on women, have posed challenges for women to advance, especially at the rural level.
However, while female representation in the legislature of Sri Lanka has increased to some extent, she emphasised that it must be further developed. She also stated, with examples, that despite regressive conditions in global politics, many women have overcome such challenges and achieved their goals.
Director Legislative Services/Director Communication (Acting) M Jayalath Perera, who was also present, said that programmes such as Student Parliaments play a vital role in shaping future leaders by enhancing leadership and good personality traits.
Assistant Director (Administration) of Parliament K R Herath educated the students on parliamentary traditions, duties, and procedures.
The session commenced with the swearing-in of the speaker and members of parliament. Thereafter, respective student ministers presented to the parliament their proposals, including programmes expected to be implemented in the school through their ministries.
Certificates were awarded to the students.
Principal D A D Wanaguru, teachers, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat Major Nadeeka Dangolla, and officers from the Parliament Communications Department participated in the event.
