Lankan universities lag in global ranking
View(s):Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its World University Rankings 2026 on June 19, featuring 1,501 institutions from 106 locations worldwide. The QS Rankings serve as a globally recognised benchmark for evaluating universities based on five key indicators: Research and Discovery, Employability and Outcomes, Learning Experience, Global Engagement, and Sustainability.
According to the global ranking 2026, the University of Colombo is in the 1,001-1,200 slot, Peradeniya University
is in the 1,200-1,400 slot and the universities of Jayewardenepura and Moratuwa are in the slot
above 1,401.
The other Lankan universities do not feature in the top 1,500 global universities ranking.
The list is topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Asia’s highest ranked university at #8.
This year, QS introduced a new unweighted indicator titled International Student Diversity, which is already part of the methodology in the QS Europe Rankings. Under this indicator, the University of Colombo has been placed in the 801+ band globally.
