Cabinet approves Rs5,000 allowance for destitute children
View(s):Cabinet this week approved the payment of a Rs5,000 monthly allowance for children in institutional care or guardianships.
Rs 1,000 million has been allocated in the 2025 budget for this.
Of the Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 will go to the development centre that houses the child or guardian for the education, health, and other welfare expenses, through the National Savings Bank. The other Rs 2,000 will be deposited monthly in a savings account in the name of the child in the National Savings Bank. Cabinet approved the appointment of a monitoring committee chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, comprising officers from other relevant institutions for the necessary guidance and post-review activities.
Institutional care is provided to children who have lost their parents or guardians or are under the guardianship of one or both parents, and where there is no protection or security in the homes they are living in, as well as to orphaned and abandoned children in detention centres, or child development centres.
There were about 9,191 children in residential care of 356 child development centres maintained by the government, voluntary organisations, and non-governmental organisations as at end 2024.
