TNA splits 4-1 on registration

Four constituent parties of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) are in favour of registering their alliance as a political party, but a fifth is not in favour. Those in favour are the TELO, the PLOTE, the TULF and the EPRLF. However the ITAK (Federal Party) is opposed to the move.

TNA parliamentary group leader R. Sampanthan, a member of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), said this issue should not be a priority for them at the moment.

When TNA members met in Colombo on Thursday, Mr. Sampanthan said registering the TNA as a political party was not a priority but finding a political solution to the problems of the Tamil people was more important.

However, members of the other four parties said they would like to file an application for registration with the Elections Commissioner.

A TNA source said that some of the constituent parties were worried that with ITAK being the dominant party, their parties and candidates would get ignored when elections were held in the North and East.

Mr. Sampanthan said the matter could be discussed later. The matter has been under discussions since the May 2009 defeat of the LTTE.
