View(s):

He was an alcoholic who was drummed out of his home by his wife and eight children. The family lived in the village of Kithulhawa Minneriyathenne Biharimullah, in the district of Kalutara, on the southwest coast.

The 74-year-old Hewasuriyage Dharmasiri, alias Dharma Baasunne, then left the village and headed for an unknown destination.

Two days later, the local Police informed the household that a man who looked very much like Hewasuriyage Dharmasiri had been found dead in the street after consuming poison in an apparent suicide.

The wife and eight siblings went to the local morgue and identified the body. The funeral was held with all the religious observances, costing the family Rs 200,000.

Two weeks later, the family thought they were seeing a ghost when the “dead man” arrived at their doorstep.

Hewasuriyage Dharmasiri had been staying with a family friend to get away from the constant nagging at home.

The Kalutara Courts ordered that the buried body be exhumed. It was found that the man who had committed suicide was a dead ringer for Hewasuriyage Dharmasiri.The “dead man’s” family has told Mr. Dharmasiri that as they had already spent two lakhs on what they thought was his funeral, he should not expect the same in the event of his real death.
