Large participation expected at Propack exhibition next year

Now that 30 years of conflict is over and a revival of agriculture, industry and economic development seen, organizers of the 10th anniversary of The Profood, Propack 2011 Exhibition expect participation from the Northern and Eastern provinces in a big way.

Food Processing, Packaging and Agribusiness have teamed up in organizing this exhibition and it will be held on 26, 27 and 29 August 2011 at the BMICH, it was announced last week in Colombo.

A public-private partnership, the show will create opportunities for individuals and companies to introduce new products, technology and services and 200 exhibiting companies from 20 countries are expected to participate in this exhibition. Rohantha Athukorala, Head, National Portfolio Development – Sri Lanka and Maldives, United Nations (UNOPS) said that the annual global food and beverages industry accounts for $ 1640 billion and Sri Lanka accounts for $ 164 million, around 0.1% of the global market. He said that the global market is growing at 16% while Sri Lankan market grows at the rate of 14%.

He said that the budget has given much impetus to this industry and by 2011 August this sector would grow rapidly and they could increase the total supply chain development.
